Who it's for

  • Tax preparers and accounting firms with 1 to 25 people
  • Offices that have never written a security plan, or have one that's out of date
  • Owners who want it finished before the busy season, not during it

The problem

Why this matters

Under the FTC Safeguards Rule, tax and accounting firms count as financial institutions. That means you must keep a written information security plan, often called a WISP.

Most offices know they need one. Few have time to write it, and a generic template doesn't match the computers, software, and people in your office.

What you get

  • A written security plan built from IRS Publication 5708
  • A plan fitted to your office's real computers, software, and workflow
  • Staff training on what the plan asks of each person
  • A written summary of what's in place and what to fix first
  • A 30-day follow-up to answer questions once the plan is in use

How it works

From first coffee to follow-up

  1. Free consultation

20 to 30 minutes by phone, video, or over coffee. Tell me the problem, and I'll include a quick 10-point check of your basics.

  2. One-page proposal

The outcome, the price, and a start date. Small fixes get an hourly estimate instead. No long contract.

  3. The work

I work around your schedule and finish with a written summary you can keep.

  4. 30-day follow-up

A check-in a month later to make sure everything is still working for you.

Timeline

Most projects take 2 to 4 weeks. Your proposal sets the start date, and I schedule the work around your office's busy season. If the project grows, we'll agree on a new timeline before going further.

Do I really need a written security plan?

If your firm prepares taxes or provides accounting services, the FTC Safeguards Rule treats it as a financial institution and requires a written information security plan. IRS Publication 5708 was written to help tax professionals create one. For questions about your firm's specific legal obligations, talk with your attorney.

Can't I just fill in the IRS template myself?

You can, and Publication 5708 is a good starting point. The hard part is making it match your office: which computers, which software, who has access to what, and what happens if something goes wrong. That's the part I work through with you.

Will this get in the way of client work?

No. Work is scheduled around your busy times, and most technical changes are made remotely, so your team keeps working.

Does this make my office compliant?
