Who it's for

  • Dealerships that arrange or offer financing for customers
  • Owner-led dealerships with 1 to 25 employees
  • Owners who know about the Safeguards Rule but don't have a written program yet

The problem

Why this matters

When your dealership arranges financing, you collect Social Security numbers, income details, and credit information. The FTC Safeguards Rule treats dealerships that arrange financing as financial institutions.

The rule expects you to protect that information with a written security program, and to know what you'll do if something goes wrong.

What you get

  • A written information security program fitted to your dealership's real systems
  • A breach response plan: who's in charge, what gets shut off, who gets notified, and what gets written down
  • A written summary of what's in place and what to fix first
  • A 30-day follow-up after delivery

How it works

From first coffee to follow-up

  1. Free consultation

20 to 30 minutes by phone, video, or over coffee. Tell me the problem, and I'll include a quick 10-point check of your basics.

  2. One-page proposal

The outcome, the price, and a start date. Small fixes get an hourly estimate instead. No long contract.

  3. The work

I work around your schedule and finish with a written summary you can keep.

  4. 30-day follow-up

A check-in a month later to make sure everything is still working for you.

Timeline

Most projects take 2 to 4 weeks. Your proposal sets the start date, and I schedule the work around the showroom and F&I office. If the project grows, we'll agree on a new timeline before going further.

Price

Fixed price, quoted after your free consultation. After the consultation, you get a one-page proposal with the outcome, the price, and a start date.

Does the Safeguards Rule apply to my dealership?

The FTC lists dealerships that arrange financing among the businesses covered by the Safeguards Rule. Exactly how it applies to your business is a question for your attorney. I handle the technical side.

What is a breach response plan?

A short written plan for what happens if customer data is exposed: who's in charge, what gets shut off, who gets notified, and what gets written down. The Safeguards Rule also requires notifying the FTC within 30 days of discovering a breach that involves information about 500 or more customers. Having the plan ready means fewer decisions under pressure.

Do you need to be at the dealership?

Only when it helps. Most technical work is done remotely, and I can visit on a weekday evening or Saturday when hands-on work is needed. Cabling and other physical installs go to a vetted local vendor.

Does this make us compliant?

Safeguards Ready builds the program you need and helps you meet the rule's requirements. ByteSize provides technical services, not legal advice, and your dealership owns its compliance program.
